Sentence connector

 A. Sentence Connectors: Use to show a relationship between two independent clauses.

 

1. However, nevertheless: use for contrast (the same meaning as “but”)

 

Many students graduate from a 4-year university. However, they aren’t able to find jobs related to their majors.

 

He thought he could get a job in a lab because of his biotech degree.  Nevertheless, he ended up working in a bookstore for a year before returning to graduate school. 

 

Social networking brings a lot of people closer together; however, it can also have a negative effect on relationships in the way that people spend so much time looking at their phones instead of interacting with those around them. 

 

 

 

2. In addition, furthermore, moreover, also: use to add more information (the same as “and”)

 

Many students move back home after they graduate from university. They aren’t prepared to get a job which will support them.  In addition, they often have a large debt that they need to repay.  

 

Amy Chua was really strict with her kids.  She didn’t let them have play dates or sleepovers.  Furthermore, they weren’t allowed to do fun activities like crafts. 

 

 

3. Therefore, as a result- use to show “for this reason” (similar to “so”)

 

Mr. Kuisla was driving too fast.  Therefore, he got a speeding ticket.

Because Mr. Kuisla was driving too fast, he got a speeding ticket.

Students graduate with large debt.  As a result, they have a hard time supporting themselves after school.

Finland has excellent social programs.  For example, they pay for college from elementary school to college.

 

 

 

 

5. Then: use to show a time relationship

            Students graduate from college.  Then, many of them move back home with their parents.
