The Invisibles' Reveals How Some Jews Survived Nazi Germany By Hiding In Plain Sight

Alice Dwyer plays the young Hanni Lévy in The Invisibles, which focuses on the lives of four German Jews who stayed in Germany during World War II and survived.

Greenwich Entertainment

Hanni Weissenberg, now Hanni Lévy, survived as a Jew in Nazi Germany.

Today, the petite and lively 94-year-old lives in Paris. Earlier this month, she returned to Berlin, her home during the war years, to attend the screening of a film about her and other Jews who survived while hiding under the noses of the Nazis.

The Invisibles, a German documentary-drama based on the accounts of four survivors, opened Friday in the U.S.

In the film, Lévy is depicted first at age 17, sitting in her Berlin apartment in 1943, with the Gestapo pounding on the door.

"That's when I knew it was now or never," Lévy tells NPR. "I knew I had to disappear. When they knocked like that, usually you had to open. But I didn't."

She managed to slip out of the apartment that day and escape.

Her parents had died of illness. Her grandmother and another Jewish family she had lived with had been deported. She was living alone and working as a forced laborer at a factory, sewing parachutes. In February 1943, the Gestapo carried out the Fabrik-Aktion or "factory action," the last major arrest of Jews to be deported to Auschwitz.

Taking only her coat and handbag, Lévy hid in her large apartment building until nightfall. Then she made her way to the home of non-Jewish friends of her parents, the only people she felt she could trust. They took her in. It would be the first of many such places of refuge.

Staying with these family friends, Lévy removed the yellow star that Nazis forced Jews to wear, dyed her hair blond and began a new life as Hannelore Winkler.

"You just had to ignore the fear in your gut and push it away, become someone else," Lévy says. "I had to try to lose myself in the masses and forget that I was scared and that I was someone who once submitted to the Nazi race laws. I had to act like a regular Berliner. And this is what saved me in the end."

"I knew it was now or never," says Hanni Lévy, 94, recalling when the Gestapo knocked on her door in 1943. "I knew I had to disappear."

Barbara Schieb, a historian with Berlin's German Resistance Memorial Center, says Jews often went completely underground in Nazi-occupied countries, sometimes helped by resistance movements. But for Jews in Germany — where potentially everyone was a Nazi and there was no organized resistance — Schieb says people had to hide in plain sight.

"They just said, 'I'm somebody else,' " says Schieb. "They invented a new Aryan-sounding identity. And for this, they needed helpers. They needed a home, something to eat, money, of course — and they needed false documents. But they were visible. You see it in the film, how they are working, meeting. And yet they are invisible. It's the false identity that is visible."

German director and producer Claus Räfle, a 30-year veteran of the film industry, says he made The Invisibles because he finds the stories of people who have to hide themselves in their own hometown amazing.

"They have to climb into different identities, and these stories are so full of tension and emotions because every day is full of risks," he tells NPR. "Every day, you can be arrested. Every day, someone can notice something strange about you. And I thought this is something that never happened before."

Räfle's movie, a drama re-created around the interviews with survivors, is interspersed with footage of Berlin during the war. It was released in Germany in 2017 and aired on German prime-time television last week.

"These are some of the last victims of Nazism who could tell their story in a very interesting and touching way," he says. "It proved it happened and that some people were helping, and that made a difference."

In addition to Lévy's story, the movie focuses on the survival of three other young Jewish Berlin residents who made it through the war years. Today, Lévy is the only one of those four still living.

One of the other survivors, Cioma Schönhaus, was an art student who became an expert forger of documents. Another, Ruth Arndt, was a young woman who worked in a German officer's house. He knew she was Jewish but kept the secret. Eugen Herman-Friede escaped suspicion by wearing the Hitler Youth uniform of the son of the family who hid him.

In the film, for which interviews were conducted 10 years ago, the four survivors talk of the constant fear, the hunger and cold they experienced. They recall a culture of denunciation so pervasive that sometimes Jews denounced other Jews in the hope of avoiding a horrible fate.

But they also talk with admiration about the people who helped them survive. "These people sheltering me had to live with just one food ration card," Lévy tells NPR. As Allied bombings of Berlin increased near the end of the war, "they often went into public bunkers with me so I wouldn't be seen in their basement. They kind of sacrificed themselves to live my life."

Stories of the thousands of Jews who went into hiding in the heart of Nazi Germany only came to light in the late 1980s, says Schieb. It took the generations born after the war to unearth and document them.

"It's tragic, but that's the way it is," says Schieb. "The first generation of this [postwar] country was not capable of doing this research. It was the next generation who pushed it. They asked, how could all this happen?"

Schieb says about 1,900 Jews survived the war while hiding in and around Berlin. Some of the stories of those who helped them are documented at the German Resistance Memorial Center in an exhibition called "Silent Heroes."

Schieb says that in 1933, about half a million Jews lived in Germany, which then had a population of 80 million. A third of the country's Jews lived in Berlin. She says about 300,000 Jews escaped before the Holocaust and 165,000 were deported. The survivors included those in mixed marriages, those who returned from the concentration camps and those who went into hiding.

Michael Müller was among those in the audience at the Berlin screening of The Invisibles. Of Lévy, he says, "She helps us account for our difficult past and learn for the future."

Marianne Enzensberger, 72, also in the audience, marveled at Lévy's generosity. "I adore this lady, that she can forgive everybody," she says. "I would never be able to do that. I can't forgive my own people for what they did."

With her was a friend, Marianne Rosenberg, whose father was Jewish and survived Auschwitz. Both women say they are worried today about the rise of the far right in Germany and Eastern Europe.

"I'm very angry about what's happening," says Enzensberger. "German people say, 'Oh, this happened so long ago,' but it was just a flash in history, a few short years ago. And some of the youngsters today, they don't know about anything."

Sophie Achenbach, 26, was stunned by The Invisibles. She says she knew about the horrors of Auschwitz but never imagined the daily injustices in the city where she lives that led up to the Holocaust.

"If you watch the movie and think about the daily lives they had — that Jews couldn't go to the doctor, that they couldn't use the public transportation, all these things," says Achenbach, "I never thought about that. And living in Berlin, this all felt very close to me. Where the movie takes place is where you walk every day."

Like most German Jewish survivors, Lévy left Germany after the war. She has lived in Paris since 1946 and says Paris is her home, the place where she has raised her happy family.

But she calls Berlin her secret garden.

"I can't forget the time I lived in Berlin," she says. "I lost my parents, and my grandmother was deported. I started another life here and lived on the margins. It's not possible to strike that from my life."

Lévy says she has no bitterness — only gratitude for the extraordinary people who helped her stay alive.

A bad attack of flu has prevented me from writing to you until today Its wretched to be ill here when i wanted to cough one two three

I crawled under the blankets and tried to stifle the noise .

Usually the only rsult was that the tickle wouldnot go away at all and milk and honey sugar or lozenges had to be brough into operation.

It make me dizzy to think of all the cures that were tried on me . Sweating , compresses , wet clothes on my chest , dry clothes on my chest , hot drinks , gargling , throat paintin , lying stilll , cushion for extra warmth , hot water bottles , lemon squashes and in addition the thermometer every two hours .
Can anyone really get better like this ?
The worst moment of all was certainly when Mr Dussel thought he wold play doctor and came and lay on my naked chest with his greasy head , in order to listen to the sound within . Not only did his hair tickle unbearably , but i was embrassed in spite of the fact that he once, thirty years ago, studied medicine and has the title of doctor. Why should the fellow come and lie on my heart?
He is not my lover  , after all ! For that matter, he wouldnot hear weather its healthy or unhealthy inside me anyway , his ear need syringing first. as he’s becoming alarmingly hard of hearing.
But that is enough about illness.
I am as fit a a fiddle  again , one centimeter taller , two pounds heavier , pale and with the reall appetite of learning.

There is no much news to tell you.
Wwe are all getting on well together for a change.
There is no quarreling we haven’t had such peace in the home for at least half a year . Elli is still parted ro us .
We received extra oil for christmax, sweets and syrup, the chief present is a brooch , made out of a two and a half cent piece and shining beautifully . Anyway , lovely but indescrible.
Mr  Dussel gave Mummy and Mr Van Daan a lovely cake which he had asked Miep to bake for him . With all her work, she has to do that as well I have also something for Miep and Elli. For the first two months . I have saved the sugar from my porridge , you see and with Mr Koophuis;s help I will have it made into fondants .
It is dizzly weather , the stove smells , the food lies heavily on everybody’s tummy , causing thunderous noises on all side ! The war at a standstill , morale rotten .
Dear Kitty ,
I have previously written about how much we are affected by atmospheres here and I think that in my own case this trouble is getting much worse lately.
Himmeloch Jaunchzend and zum TOde betrubt certainly fits here
I am Himmeloch jauchzend
if i only think how luckly we ar eher compared with other jewish children, and zum Tode Betrubt come over me when as happened today for example Mr Koophuis comes and tells us about her daughter Cory’s Hockey club , canoe (alight  narrow boat with pointed end with no keels / a light narrow boat that you move along inthe water with a padddle ) trips ,  theatrical performances and friends . I don’t think i am jealous of Corry , but I could not help feeling a great longing to have lots of fun my self for once , nd laugh until  my tummy ached . Especially at this time of the year with all the holidays for CHristmas and the New Year , and we are stuck here like outcasts . Still I really ought not to write this , because it seems ungreatful and I have certainly been exaggerating. But still, whatever you think of me, I can’t keep everything to myself, so I will remind you of my opening words . Paper is patient .
When someone comes in from outside with the wind in their clothes and the cold on their faces then I could bury my head in the blankets to stop myself thinking . When we be granted the privilege of smelling fresh air ? And because I must not bury my head in the blankets but the reverse I must keep my head high and be brave , the thoughts will come not once , but oh countless times . Believe me , if you have been shut up for a year and a half l it can get too much for you some days . In spite of all justice and thankfulness you cannot crush your feelings .
Cycling , dancing whilstling , looking out into the world feeling young to know that I am free. thats what I long for , still , I mustnot show it , because sometimes think if all eight of us began to pity ourselves , or went about with discontented faces , where would it lead us ? I sometimes ask myself “ Would anyone ,, either Jew or Non Jew understand this about me, that I am simply a young girl badly in need of some rollicking fun.

Rollicking

I don’t know an I could not talk about it to any one , because then I know I should crying can bring such relief.

In spite of all my theories and however much trouble I take each day I miss having real mother who understand me . That is why with everything I do and write think of the Mumsie that I want to be for my children  later on . The Mumsie who doesn’t take every thing that is said in general conversation. so seriously. I have noticed , through I cannot explain how , that the word Mumsie tells you everything . O you know what i have found ? To give me the filing of calling mummy something which sounds like Mumsie I often call her Mum then from that come Mums the incomplete Mumsie as it were whom I would so love to honor ith the extra ie and yet who does not realize it . Its a good thing because it would only make her unhappy . Thats enough about that writing. Has made my zum tode betrubt fo off a bit.

Saturday 25 December 1943

Dear Kitty,

During these days now that Christmax is here , i find myself thinking all the time about Pim and what he told me about the love of his youth. Last year I didnot understand the meaning of his words as well as I do now . IF he would only talk about it again , perhaps I would be able to  show him that I understand.

I believe that Pim talk about it because he who knows the secret of so many other hearts had to express his own feeling for once because otherwise Pim never says a word about himself, and I don’t think Margot has any idea of all Pim has had to go through.

Poor Pim he cannot make me think that he has forgotten everything. He will never forget this . He has become very tolerent . I hope that I shall grow a bit like him. Without having to go through all that .

Monday 27 December 1943

On the Friday evening for the first time in my life I received something or christmas Koophuis , Kraler and the girl had prepared a lovely surprise again. Miep has made a lovely Christmax cake. , on which was written Peace 1944  Elli had provided a pound of sweet biscuits of yoghurt and a bottle of beer for each of the grownnups . Everything was so nicely done up , and there were pictures stuck on the different packages . Otherwise Christmas passed by quickly for us.

Wednesday 29 December 1943

I was very unhappy again last evening . Granny and Lies came into my mind. Granny, oh darling Granny how little we understood of what she suffered or how sweet she was . And besides all this she knew a terrible secret which she carefully kept to herself the whole time. How faithful and good Granny always was , she would never have let one of us down. Whatever it was however naughty I had been , Granny always stuck up for me .

Granny did you love me or didn’t you understand me either  ? I don’t know . NO one ever talked about themselves to Granny. How lonely Granny must have been, how lonely in spite of us ! A person can be lonely even if he is loved by many people, becase he is till not the One and Only to anyone.

And lies , is she still alive ? What is she doing ? Oh God protect her and bring her back to us . Lies , I see in you all the time what my lot might have been , I keep seeing my self in your place . Why then should I often be unhappy over what happen here? Shouldn’t  I always be glad, contented, and happy , except when I think about her and her companions in distress ? I am selfish and cowardly. Why do i always dream and think of most terrible things my fear makes me want to scream out lout sometimes . Because still , in spite of everything. I have not enough faith in God . He has given me so much that is wrong everyday . IF you think of your fellow creatures , then you only want to cry , you could really cry the whole day long . The only thing to do is pray that God will perform a miracle and save some of them. And I hope that I am doing that enough.

Sunday 2 January 1944

This morning when I had nothing to do. I turned over some of the pages of my dairy and several times I came across letters dealing with the subject Mummy in such a hotheaded way that I was quite shocked and asked myself . Anne is it really you who mentioned hate ? Oh , Anne , how could you “ I remained sitting with the open page in my hand and thought about it how it came about tht I should have been so brimful of rage and really so filled with such a thing as hate that  I had to confide it all in you .

I have been trying

Diary of Anne Frank page 30 to 60

 just had a big

for the umpteenth time

we simply get on together there s day urst up with mummy these days and Margot and I don't hit if off any too well either .

As a rule we don't go for such outbursts as this in our family.

Still, its by no means always pleasant for me .

Margots's and Mummy natures are completely strange to me .

I can understand my friends better than my own mother too bad

We often discuss post war problem for example how one ought to address servants

Mrs Van Dann had another tantrum.

She is terribly moody. She keeps hiding more of her private belongings.

Mummy ought to answer each Van Den disappearance with Mr Frank disappearance .

How some people do alone bringing up other people children in addition to other own the Van Dans are that kind . Margot doesn't need it  she is such a goody goody perfection itself , but i seem to have enough mischief in me for the two of us put together.  You should hear us  at mealtimes, with reprimands and cheeky answer flying to and fro.

Mummy and daddy always defend me stoutly

stoutly

adverb
/ˈstaʊtli/

/ˈstaʊtli/
  1. in a brave and determined way
    • ‘I disagree,’ said Polly stoutly.

I have to give up if it weren't for them.
Although they do tell me that i must not talk so much. that i must be more retiring and not poke my nose into everything, still I doomed to failure
If Daddy was not so patient, i would be afraid I was going to turn out to be a terrific disappointment to my parents and they are pretty lenient with me

lenient
adj
သက္ညွာေသာ။

lenient

adjective
/ˈliːniənt/
/ˈliːniənt/
not as strict as expected when punishing somebody or when making sure that rules are obeyed
  • a lenient sentence/fine
  • The judge was far too lenient with him.
    detest
    vt
    ရႊံ႕ရွာမုန္းတီးသည္။

If I take a small helping of some vegetable i detest and make up with potatoes, the Van Daans and Mevrouw in particular , cannot get over it that and any child should be so spoiled.

Come along Anne , have a few more vegetables . she says straight away

No, thank you . Mrs. Van Dann I answer . I have planty of potatoes

Vegetables are good for you , your mother says so too. Have a few more. She says , pressing then on me until Daddy come me to rescue.

Then we have from Mrs. Van  Dann You ought to have been in our home , we were properly brought up. Its absurd (

extremely silly; not logical and sensible ) ကတ္သီးကတ္သတ္ႏိုင္ေသာ  that Anne so frightfully spoiled.I would not put up with it if Anne were my daughter.

These are always her first and last words , if Anne were my daughter . Thanks heavens I am not.

But more come back to this upbringing business . There was a deadly silence after Mrs Van Daan had finished speaking yesterday. Then Daddy said " I think Anne extremely well brought up. She has learned one thing anyway. an that is to make no reply to your long sermons . (

As to the vegetables , look at your own plate. Mrs Van Daan was beaten , well and truly beaten.

She had taken a minute helping of vegetables herself

But she is not spoiled . Oh, no too many vegetables in the evening make her constipated. Why on earth doesnot she keep her mouth shut about me, then she owuld not need to make such terrible excuses . its gorgeous the way Mrs Van Dan blushes I don't and that is just what she hates

 page 32

Monday 28 September 1942

Dear Kitty ,

I had to stop yesterday, long before I would finished I just must tell you about another quarrel , but before I start that something else .

Am I really so bad mannered , conceited ကိုယ္႔ကိုယ္ကိုယ္ အထင္ၾကီးျခင္း။ ဘဝင္ျမင့္ျခင္း။ ေသြးၾကီးျခင္း။ (စာေပ) အတင္အျပ၊ စိတ္ကူးစိတ္သန္း ေကာင္းမြန္မႈ။ head strong , all say? etc as they pushing , stupid ,lazy faults . Oh of course not ,I have my

faults just like everyone else .I know that but they thoroughtly exaggerate everything .

Kitty , if only  you knew how I sometimes boil under so many gibes and jeers . And i don't know how long i shall be able to stifle my range . I shall just blow up one day.

Still , no more of this , i have bored you long enough with
all this quarrels . But i simply must tell you one highly interesting
discussion at table.
Somehow or other, we got on to the subject of Pim's Daddy 's nick name extreme modesty.
Even the most stupid people have to admit this about daddy. Duddenly Mrs Van Daan says , I too have an assuming nature , more so than my husband.
Dis you ever !
This sentence in itself show quite clearly how thoroughly forward and pushing she is
Mr Van Dan was scarlet နီရေသာ။ နီနီရဲရဲ။ နီျမန္းေသာ by this time.
Mummy calm and cool as a cucumber .
People who blush get so hot and excited ,it is quite a handicap in such a situation.  Mummy still entirely unruffled but anxious to close the conversation as soon as possible , thought for a second and then  said . I find too Mr Van Daan that one gets on better in life if one is not overmodest. My husband , now and Margot , Anne , you and I though not exactly the opposite side ,Mr Van Daan But Mrs Frank I don't understand you , I am so very modest and retiring . How can you think of calling me anything else? Mummy " I did not say you were exactly forward , but no one could say you were exactly forward , but no one could say you had a retiring disposition . Mrs Van Daan . Let us get this matter cleared up , once and for all . I ;d like to know in what way I am pushing ? I know one thing , If i did not look after my self, i would soon be starving.

Anational Geographic Kid ( Anne Frank )

netgeokids.com

She was born in 12 June 1929 at Frankfurt Germany

Her occupation was Jewish Diarist

She was died on February 1945

Her diary was best known for entry of world war II

Anne frank was born in Germany Frankfurt on June 12 1929,from Jewish Family.

Nazis wanted to take Anne's sister Margot to Germany but her family refused to be separated and went into hiding . Anne 's father prepare several month for hiding place in the back of the house of his company at Prinsengracht 263.

she loves writing she wanted to become a famous writer. She wrote everyday event in her diary.

Things that probably didnot seem important at that time, but that have helps us from a picture of what life was like during this incredibly difficult time in history.

she wrote about what she ate , the film stars that she admired, the books she read, and the argument she would had with her mother. She also wrote about being hiding the fear and the difficulties and how she longed to go outside.

for example they were not allowed to flush in care the warehouse worker could heard them. Anne was only rarely allowed to open a window. she could never go outside either.

How did Anne die?

The nazis found their hiding place . They took 8 people in hiding to Westerbork

The camp held jewish people

A month later they were sent to Aushwitz

A larger concentration camp

Their father Otto was only the survivor of eight people in hiding the secret Annex

Annex diary was saved by other helper

Anne's father has four helper

They are < Miep Gies , Bep VOskuijl, Johnannes Kleiman and Victor Krugler >

Anne's father was the only survival among of 8 people , he was returned  to Amsterdam after world war II.

He received his daughter diary from Miep. The day he received the diary , Anne and Margot died in Bergen- Belsen.  He started to read Anne's diary and published it , making Anne's dream of becoming a writer reality.

The diary was published in 1947.

The title is TheSecret Annex

The diary was sold million of copies and translated 70 languages .

It remains an important account of the treatment that Jewish people suffered at the hand of Nazis.

Otto hoped that his daughter's diary would educate readers on the dangers of hatred against others , prejudice and discrimination.

In 1960, with the help of Otto , the former hiding place opened its doors as a museum, named the Anne Frank House. Each year, it is visited by more that 1.2 million people from around the world to learn more about Anne Frank's life story.

The Jews are people born into a Jewish family or practice the religion of Judaism.

The Nazis were a group of people who followed the ideas of a German Leader named Adolf Hitler.

Many people lost their life due to hash treatment they faced, liked being forced to work, lack of food , lack of space , lack of healthcare. Auschwitz, the largest concentration camp complex was based in Poland.
